KOMSOMOLSK — ON — AMUR
Komsomolsk-on-Amur was planned in January 1932 on the bank of the river Amur on the site of the old village of Permskoye and the neighboring Nanai village of Dzyomgy. The first groups of young builders began to come in April and on the 10th of December 1932 this place was named Komsomolsk-on-Amur. It started as an industrial center, the biggest industrial center in the Far East. In 1935-36 the aircraft-building plant and the ship-building plant appeared. In the war period the machine-building plant and the metallurgical plant were put into operation. Now there are also chemical, food, wood-working, light, oil-refining and construction industries.
Komsomolsk is also a great transport center in the Far East. There are a lot of bus routs and tram lines, two river ports, an airport and a railway station.
The population of Komsomolsk-on-Amur is more than 300 thousand people. And it is a cultural center too. There are two higher educational establishments: the Teacher's training University and the Technical University, many secondary and vocational schools in it There are many cinemas, theatres (the Drama theatre, the theatre "KNAM", the youth theatre studious), museums (the museum of Fine Arts, the museum of Local Studies), palaces of culture and libraries. Ostrovsky's library is the biggest one. You can see a monument to N.Ostrovsky in front of it.
There are many monuments in Komsomolsk: the memorial complex to the heroes of the Great Patriotic War, the monument to the first-builders on the bank of the Amur, the Memorial stone on the place of their landing, the sculptural group "To the Komsomol members of the 30th etc. One can also see a beautiful House of Youth on the bank of the Amur.
Komsomolsk is a beautiful town. There are many trees in the streets, especially in the old parts of the town. There are five big parks and a lot of small ones here. The biggest park is on the river Silenka. Some time ago this river consisted of three rivers, then one of them was ruined. The Silenka divides the town into two districts: the Central district and the Lenin district. The streets of our town are designed in the form of a fan and almost each of them has a hill at the end.
We are proud of our town and like it very much.

Moscow
Moscow is the capital of Russia, its political, economic, commercial and cultural centre. It was founded 8 centuries ago by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1147. Gradually the city became more and more powerfull. In the 13th century Moscow was the centre of the struggle of Russian lands for the liberation from the tartar yoke. In the 16th century under Ivan the Terrible Moscow became the capital of the new united state. Though Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1712; Moscow remained the heart of Russia. That's why it became the main target of Napoleon's attack. After the October revolution Moscow became the capital again.
Now Moscow is one of the largest cities in Europe. Its total area is about nine hundred square kilometres. The population of the city is over 8 million.
Moscow is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The heart of Moscow is Red Square. The Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral (Vasily Blazheny) are masterpieces of encient Russian architecture. On the territory of the Kremlin you can see old cathedrals, the Palace of Congresses, the Tzar-Cannon and the Tzar-Bell, the biggest cannon and bell in the world. St. Basil's Cathedral was built in the mid-16th century in memory of the victory over Kazan.
One of the well-known Kremlin museums is the Armouty Chamber. The famous golden cap of Monomach, the first Russian imperial crown of Catherin the second and many other historical items are exhibited there.
There are more than 80 museums in Moscow. The Historical Museum, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the Tretyakov State Picture Gallery are world famous and the largest.
Moscow is famous for its theatres. The best-known of them are Bolshoi, Maly and Art theatres.
Moscow is the seat of the Russian Parliament (the Duma) and the centre of political life of the country.

Culture of Great Britain
Artistic and cultural life in Britain is rather rich. It passed several main stages in its development. The Saxon King Alfred encouraged the arts and culture. The chief debt owed to him by English literature is for his translations of and commentaries on Latin works. Art, culture and literature flowered during the Elizabethan age, during the reign of Elizabeth I; it was the period of English domination of the oceans. It was at this time that William Shakespeare lived. The empire, which was very powerful under Queen Victoria, saw another cultural and artistic hey-day as a result of industrialisation and the expansion of international trade. But German air raids caused much damage in the First World War and then during the Second World War. The madness of the wars briefly interrupted the development of culture.
Immigrants who have arrived from all parts of the Commonwealth since 1945 have not only created a mixture of nations, but have also brought their cultures and habits with them. Monuments and traces of past greatness are everywhere. There are buildings of all styles and periods. A great number of museums and galleries display precious and interesting finds from all parts of the world and from all stage in the development of nature, man and art. London is one of the leading world centres for music, drama, opera and dance. Festivals held in towns and cities throughout the country attract much interest. Many British playwrights, composers, sculptors, painters, writers, actors, singers and dancers are known all over the world. Inigo Jones and Christopher Wren Inigo Jones was the first man to bring the Italian Renaissance style to Great Britain.
He had studied in Italy for some years, and in 1615 became Surveyor-General of the works. The style he built in was pure Italian with as few modifications as possible. His buildings were very un-English in character, with regularly spaced columns along the front. His two most revolutionary designs were the Banqueting House in Whitehall and the Queen's House at Greenwich. The plan of the latter, completely symmetrical, with its strict classical details and the principal rooms on the first floor, influenced architecture in Britain. But not during the lifetime of Inigo Jones. All those who followed him had to adapt this new foreign building technique to English ways and English climate, English building materials and English craftsmen. Christopher Wren was the man who did it. He was a mathematician, an astronomer and, above all, an inventor.
He invented new ways of using traditional English building materials, brick and ordinary roofing tiles, to keep within the limits of classical design. He, like Inigo Jones, was appointed Surveyor-General to the Crown when he was about thirty years old, and almost immediately he started rebuilding the churches of London, burnt down in the Great Fire of 1666. Wren's churches are chiefly known by their beautiful spires, which show in their structure the greatest engineering cunning.But Ch. Wren also influenced the design of houses, both in town and in the country.The best-known buildings designed by Ch. Wren are St. Paul's Cathedral in London and the Sheldonion Theatre in Oxford. The period of the Industrial Revolution had no natural style of its own. Businessmen wanted art for their money. The architect was to provide a facade in the Gothic style, or he was to turn the building into something like a Norman castle, or a Renaissance palace, or even an Oriental mosque. For theatres and opera houses the theatrical Baroque style was often most suitable. Churches were more often than not built in the Gothic style. The twentieth century has seen great changes in Britain's architecture.
