Introduction
This paper is devoted to the theme «Monopoly behaviour: theory and practice». The problem of this study has relevance in the modern world. This is evidenced by the frequent study of the raised issues. Consideration of a monopoly is important for the economy of any country, each country faces with this problem to some extent. Also the relevance of the theme comes from the fact that at the present time there are a lot of monopolistic associations, so that the government is taking active measures to regulate their activities. The study of issues, devoted to the activity of the monopolistic enterprises, has not only theoretical but also practical significance. For example, in Russia, where over 30% of products names of the industry are manufactured by one company, the problem of pure monopoly occupies a central place in the economic analysis. Therefore, the study of problems of microeconomic nature, caused by the activities of monopoly enterprises, is of paramount importance.
The aim of this work is to study the behavior of firms in a monopoly. For a comprehensive and detailed review of this topic, we must have an idea of what are the main causes of the monopolies, what is the monopoly power and what is the social cost of its power, what is the assessment of the monopolies role in the market development.
To achieve this goal, we need to solve a number of related tasks:
1. To consider the economic sources of monopoly power and existing monopolies;
2. To understand the role of monopolies in the assessment of market development;
3. To analyze the behavior of pure monopoly.
Goals and objectives led to the structure of the paper, which consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusion, list of references and applications.
In the first chapter it’s presented an overview of the monopoly as imperfect competition in the modern economy, the basic concepts, sources and types.
The second chapter discusses the analysis of firm behavior in a monopoly, which is supplemented by examples and practice of the Russian JSC «Gazprom». The objective is to examine the behavior of JSC «Gazprom» in the conditions of monopoly, review of the reforms, undertaken by the company.
The conclusion is a generalization of the derivations about the nature of monopoly behavior, as well as the impact of a monopoly on society.
