Introduction
Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman to be elected to the U.S. Congress. She served seven terms as a representative from New York's 12th district, from 1969 until her retirement in 1982. Chisholm grew up in Barbados and also in New York City, where she earned a graduate degree from Columbia University in 1952. She taught school before entering the New York state assembly in 1964 and then easily winning election to Congress in 1968.
During her New York legislative career, she had faced much more discrimination because she was a woman than because she was black.
So, on August 10, 1970, she delivered a speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives urging support for the Equal Rights Amendment.
The aim of this public speech was to explain the audience that it is time to equal, under the law, men and women, to prevent Discrimination against women.
In addition the speaker gave a lot of examples of discrimination and described the possibilities of improving this matter. The speech was intended to convince the audience that women must have the same rights as men: the right of education, the right on good job and wage and etc.
