Introduction
This research is targeted at style characterisation of the novel “Theatre” by William Somerset Maugham (1874 – 1965), one of the greatest literary style innovators, from the linguistic point of view taking into consideration the most essential stylistic features, which are proper to the novel making its highly implicit and expressive way of narration very particular. What we are talking about here is stylistic analysis of “Theatre” both on and above the level of the word, word combination and sentence.
Most of the latest style researches both in Russia and abroad, unfortunately, to our mind, fail to explicate his individual style in general.
As to the contemporary Russian stylistics experts, among whom we are going to rely mainly on I. V. Arnold [Арнольд 2010], Y. A. Belchikov [Бельчиков 2002]
and A. A. Maslennikova’s [Масленникова 1999]
points of view, they are following the same way, letting literary criticism deal with the problem of style on the level that does not investigate ambivalence and implicit meanings of each stylistic device in particular. Those researches as well as many others make up the theoretical foundation of our study.
The urgency of our research is caused by increasing interest of English and Russian speaking linguists to the problem of style and intentional implicit meanings of each trope used in literary texts.
The research in question concerns W.S. Maugham’s literary evolution, individual style, unity of composition and therefore is targeted at finding out the most essential stylistic features of one of the most popular British novels -“Theatre”.
The purpose of the research is specificity of stylistic devices in W.S. Maugham’s “Theatre”, making the narration of the novel highly expressive. Considering the volume of our research, our task will be determined as analysis of the novel at the level of such word and word combination stylistic devices as simile, metaphor, metonymy, pun, litote and such sentence stylistic devices as irony and rhetorical question.
The tasks of the research can be formulated as follows:
1. To characterise development of W.S. Maugham’s literary evolution,
2. To find out some particular features of his individual style,
3. To determine the ways W.S. Maugham followed to make his narration (unity of composition) highly expressive,
4. To show what style methods are used to make the reader admire W.S. Maugham’s style in the novel “Theatre” and analyse them in detail.
The research consists of the introduction, two chapters, conclusion and biography.
