Fords unluckiness was followed by an automotive crisis of 2008-2010 which was a part of global financing downturn. It was linked to 2003-2008 energy crisis. The industry was weakened by increasing fuel prices, it caused the decrease of selling sports car’s and SUV for their high level of fuel consumption. So the Detroit’s “big three” Ford, GM, Daimler Chrysler struggled because these kind of cars were their primary focus. With fewer fuel-efficient models to offer to consumers, sales began to slide. Followed by credit crunch the situation turned critical. Car sales declined in the United States, affecting both US and foreign car manufacturers. Criticism of their product range, product quality, high labor wages, job bank programs and automotive industry crisis led to losing market share for Ford and other American companies. The few consumers purchased vehicles, doing so for practical reasons, with a focus on fuel efficiency, durability, and carmaker’s sustainability. Many banks were not making car loans. This situation was disadvantageous to auto firms. In 2008, the Big Three offered lowered interest rates or zero percent financing to attract buyers.

Ford Motor Company faces many strategic challenges during these volatile economic times. The U.S. auto industry has made quite a comeback since the recession crippled the economy several years ago. Today, the greatest challenge facing automakers is the extraordinarily competitive nature of the business. Ford faces a range of revived and new competitors General Motors and Chrysler were restored to health by the U.S. taxpayers. There are new transplant factories in the South. Hyundai/Kia has become very competitive and right behind it is China with 100 automakers many of which have global ambitions. By 2005, Ford’s corporate bonds had been downgraded to junk status as a result of high U.S. health care costs for an aging workforce, soaring gasoline prices, eroding market share, and an over dependence on declining SUV sales. Unavailability of credit, high unemployment, hike in the gas prices, the slump in the economy, and automotive crisis 2008-2010 caused a lot of problems for Ford Motor Company.
